Proving the Benefits of Home Education
Permalink 25/05/07 @ 09:50:00 pm , Categories: Research, Reports

I got to thinking that what many countries lack is evidence for the benefits and outcomes of home education. Scientific proof. Expert opinion. The US has a lot of this and other countries try to ride on the back of the positive findings which I am not saying is wrong but will the law-makers take heed?

Still, that being all, use it we must.

An initial search online has led me to the following references, reports, studies and papers:

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)

2004 UK study of notschooled 4 and 5 year olds by PJ Rothermel

A specific edition of 'Evaluation and Research in Education' on Home Education

I hope this helps those currently before the courts in Germany and at the EU level.

I went to visit our local member of the state parliament (in Germany the individual states make their own educational laws) and left him summaries, in German, of some of these studies.

Some of these studies, especially the Ray ones, have elicited criticism from some home educators and others. A friend of mine who uses these studies has an interesting rejoinder. She says that if someone wants to criticise these studies as being biased, then it is up to the other side to start doing its own studies.

Good point Scatty, about the 'other side' proving otherwise.

I still find it hard to believe that a person or government would choose to remain naive about anything contrary to their own personal viewpoint despite the evidence, as it is apparent so many do. Are they not there to serve the community and represent the common good?

And yet those of us who have evaluated the research and thought long and hard about educating our own (and in the majority of cases also experienced formal 'schooling') are made out to be narrow-minded! Oh, the irony.

Do you know of any other studies that could be added to this list?

The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for school attendance is to protect against a pluralist society. I'd like to explore the various arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

It is my sincere hope that this information may help people internationally to lobby for change on behalf of those who want to or are trying to exercise their human right to raise their children the way they choose to.

Please join me in gathering facts, studies and quotes and add them to this blog.
