22 months - No Petitions Hearing - but wait it's coming!

Permalink 04/22/09 @ 01:07:00 am , Categories: German Law, Action

Today was one of those rare days that I got to collect the mail, and the surprise continued upon the discovery of a letter from the Deutscher Bundestag Petitionsausschuss - the German Federal Government Petitions Committee.

It was basically an 'oops, your submission was overlooked' type letter but it contained a hint of hope.

The correspondent indicated that since my original letter of June 2007 there have been several other submissions on the same issue, and that all will be heard at the same time.

Lets hope that this means that it will be weighted in favour of legalising home education.

Do I really think that they will take notice? Well, it depends on how many 'others' there are out there and whether the Petitions Committee has a backbone at Federal level unlike the other government departments (who pass the buck to the Regional Governments).

Have you written?

Its probably not too late to send your request to the Petitions Committee for home education to be recognised as a legitimate option within the German education system, especially via email or fax.

The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for forced school attendance is to protect against parallel societies.

Educating Germany discusses arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

We report on human rights violations; provide translations of media articles, interviews, court hearings and personal stories into English; and suggest practical ways people, internationally, can lobby for change and support those who long for freedom of education.
