"The Unschoolers Manual", "And I never went to School"

Two books have come out recently in the German language - one a translation of 'The Unschoolers Manual' (Das Freilerner-Buch) by Jan Hunt and the other one man's account of his childhood education outside of school '...and I was never in school. The story of a happy child' (...und ich war nie in der Schule. Geschichte eines glücklichen Kindes) by André Stern.

What I find interesting is the poll listed in the Welt online publication within the article for André's book that asks the question

"Should compulsory school attendance be abolished in Germany too?"

And I never went to school
A whooping 65% of 655 voters said YES!

There is also a lot of interesting discussion in the comments section under the article - all publicity is good publicity‽

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for forced school attendance is to protect against parallel societies.

Educating Germany discusses arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.
