If this is how you treat foreigners.....?

Recently an American family came to my attention as they were frustrated by the German school system that one of their children is enrolled in.

As you can read in the father's posts:

  • the school refused to teach the child German, saying it was the responsibility of the English-speaking parents
  • they refused the parents the opportunity of transferring to the other public school in town
  • and when the parents found an alternative school, the current school refused those school administrators entrance to their premises to observe the child in question.

It is all very bureaucratic and reflective of the German school system's total disregard for the parents and their protégé. Where do they 'get off'?

How it began
More about that meeting
Knocked back
Visit to another school
You've got to be kidding - they did what?
Won't you come on in?

We can give a lot of lessons in English, a lot of free learning time ("learning office" and project learning). We are a very small (and young) school at Jena. Look at www.leonardo-jena.de (the homepage is not very new, but you can find some information).

Friendly greetings

Jena is a long way from where this family is, but other readers could be interested in this alternative to traditional public school - at least until homeschooling is legal ;)

Its good to know that there are people out there that actually observe how children learn and provide environments to nurture that curiosity and zeal.

Keep up the great work!

The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for forced school attendance is to protect against parallel societies.

Educating Germany discusses arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

We report on human rights violations; provide translations of media articles, interviews, court hearings and personal stories into English; and suggest practical ways people, internationally, can lobby for change and support those who long for freedom of education.
