Sign the Open Letter to the Educational Summit!

With the upcoming Educational Summit in October, there is a letter being sent on behalf of the Network for Educational Freedom and others, to Dr Annette Schavan (the Minister of Education) requesting educational diversity.

This letter is on the Network for Educational Freedom (Netzwerk Bildungsfreiheit) website and their request is for people to register their support for it there, either publicly or privately.

It may be interesting to note that only a few weeks ago the nations Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel was on record as saying Germany needed to concentrate on being the "Educational Republic of Germany". Hmmmmm....!

And lets not forget "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (unity, justice and freedom).

Offener Brief zum Bildungsgipfel Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung Frau Ministerin Dr. Annette Schavan -persönlich- Hannoversche Straße 28-30 10115 Berlin Sehr geehrte Frau Ministerin, anlässlich des von Ihnen vorbereiteten Bildungsgipfels möchten wir mit vielen anderen betroffenen Familien auf eine Besonderheit des deutschen Schulsystems hinweisen, die in der öffentlichen Debatte um die Schulmisere bisher zuwenig Berücksichtigung findet: In Deutschland wird die Schulpflicht seit 1938 als Schulzwang aufgefasst, der keine Bildungsalternativen zulässt. Dieses Instrument, bei dem alle Kinder und Jugendlichen dem Zwang zur physischen Anwesenheit in einem Schulgebäude unterliegen, trägt modernen Bildungserfordernissen in einer Informationsgesellschaft nicht mehr Rechnung und verhindert durch das staatliche Bildungsmonopol die notwendige schnelle Wandlung der Bildungsangebote. In sämtlichen anderen europäischen Ländern und fast allen entwickelten Staaten weltweit (!) steht Schülern neben den privaten Schulen auch die Möglichkeit des "Distance Learning" oder Freien Lernens mit Hilfe von Fernschulen und "Umbrella Schools" zu Gebote. Diese Möglichkeit ist besonders angesichts zunehmend verlangter Mobilität für viele Familien wichtig. Deutsche Kinder haben diese Option aber nur, wenn sie im Ausland leben, prominent sind (siehe Brüder Kaulitz von der Jugendband Tokio Hotel) oder schulisch bereits vollkommen gescheitert (Flex-Fernschule in Baden-Württemberg oder Web-Individualschule in Bochum, Erfolgsquote 100 %). Eine Erweiterung des Bildungsangebotes in Deutschland um diese modifizierte Form der Schulpflichterfüllung würde nicht nur diesen Familien helfen, die derzeit leider meist gezwungen sind, wie wir ins Ausland abzuwandern. Sie würde auch einen gesunden Konkurrenzdruck erzeugen und so mithelfen, unser Schulen schnell zu Orten zu machen, an denen gut und gerne gelernt wird. Ein Monopol hat noch nie zur Qualitätserhöhung beigetragen. Die hervorragenden Ergebnisse des Freilernens für Lernen und Sozialisation können anhand zahlreicher Studien aus verschiedenen Ländern (außer Deutschland) eindeutig belegt werden. Die ungerechtfertigte Kriminalisierung des Freilernens führt nicht zu einem Eindämmen dieser erfolgreichen Lernform, sondern zu einer Abwanderung der an dieser Lernform interessierten Familien ins Ausland. Wir haben den Eindruck, dass der Widerstand der Landesbehörden hauptsächlich auf Unkenntnis über die internationale Lage und unhaltbare Vorurteile über die Folgen einer Legalisierung zurückgeht. Dies möchten wir gern ändern und bitten Sie daher, uns anlässlich des Bildungsgipfels und im Vorfeld die Möglichkeit dazu zu geben. Wir freuen uns auf Ihre Antwort. An expansion of educational opportunities in Germany to include these other forms of education that fulfill the school attendance requirement would not only help these families, but also those presently emigrating, unfortunately due to the duress of forced school attendance. The excellent results of 'alternative learners' in learning and socialization are clearly documented in many studies from different countries (except Germany). Unjustified criminalization of complimentary learning does not lead to a a stemming of successful learning, but instead to a migration abroad, of these families interested in this learning pedagogy. The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for school attendance is to protect against a pluralist society. I'd like to explore the various arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

It is my sincere hope that this information may help people internationally to lobby for change on behalf of those who want to or are trying to exercise their human right to raise their children the way they choose to.
