Time to Fight for the Gorber Family!
Permalink 18/07/08 @ 12:00:00 pm , Categories: Action, Gorber

The Gorber family will have their next day in court on July 29th, 2pm in Überlingen (near Lake Constance).

These folks have homeschooled for 10 years and are fighting for the return of the 6 of their 9 children who were taken from them and put in foster homes 6 months ago.

Although the authorities used the smoke screen of the mothers gestational diabetes and state of mind as the excuse for removing the children along with perhaps the husband's inability to cope with so many on his own, the stronger likelihood is that homeschooling is the real concern.

The judge made it a condition of the children's return that they must be enrolled in a 'normal' school.

Since that stipulation there have been expert reports on 5 of the 6 children that state that homeschooling has been a relative success and mention that the children get along with each other, have a good general knowledge, and are really quite strong and confident.

Do you think that counts?

A campaign has been started to sign a letter of petition on behalf of the Gorber family requesting the return of their children, at Medrum.de.

At the moment is has not been translated into English so I would not expect you to be adding your name to it until such time as it was. Here is the original German letter (pdf) and signature form (pdf).

However I do have some contact details for your own letters ...

Please try to write respectfully and avoid comparisons with Hitler and the 3rd Reich. These are going to need to be written and send fairly promptly folks especially if going snail mail as you know how quick the postal service is!

The opportunity to send cards or letters to the family and/or the children themselves still stands too!
[Remember you can send us a .jpg photo for the Gorber Gallery as well - gorber [at] 7doves [dot] com ]

The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for school attendance is to protect against a pluralist society. I'd like to explore the various arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

It is my sincere hope that this information may help people internationally to lobby for change on behalf of those who want to or are trying to exercise their human right to raise their children the way they choose to.

Please join me in gathering facts, studies and quotes and add them to this blog.
