Educating Rita / To Sir with Love

Do you remember these movies?

Thats how I see education reform in Germany:

Rita is like the 'authorities' and Jugendamter - simple and naive, coming into a new situation that is specialised but it is outside of their sphere of common (mis)understanding. The professor is like the repressed home educators who keep on going but the love of life (not the love of their children) is being zapped. In the case of Germany, by the state themselves, through legal actions against them.

Sir, on the other hand is the epitome of what home educators need to do to bring about reform - they need to understand where the social majority are coming from; understand the objections and pitch relevant information in succinct chunks with dignity to break down personal barriers.

The Status Quo

For those new to the situation in Germany: home educating is (perceived as) illegal.

The common citation for school attendance is to protect against a pluralist society. I'd like to explore the various arguments for (and against) legalising home education in Germany.

It is my sincere hope that this information may help people internationally to lobby for change on behalf of those who want to or are trying to exercise their human right to raise their children the way they choose to.
